Parish Organizer
If your parish does not already have an established Parish Executive Committee, then the Parish Organizer is responsible for holding a caucus to elect one. If your parish does not have an organizer listed, and you'd like to volunteer, please send an e-mail to the LPL Secretary.
Once you've expressed interest in organizing your parish, the Secretary will give you the required materials and assistance you need to hold a successful caucus.
Responsibilities of the Parish Organizer are:
- Coordinate with the Parish Organizers or established PEC's in that region for setting dates and venues for their respective caucuses.
- Assist Parish Organizers with holding their caucuses.
- Set a date for the caucus and secure a suitable venue. The meeting place will need to be free from distraction. Public library meeting rooms are excellent for this and should accommodate most size caucuses.
- Publish the announcement for the caucus with date, time, and contact info for more details in at least one, if not more public calendars with local newspapers, radio, TV, etc. The more the better. Your caucus date should be far enough in advance of this announcement that people will hear or read it, and be able to attend. Also be mindful of cutoff dates for submissions to the various calendars.
- Using the Libertarian contact list provided to you by the Secretary, contact as many Libertarians as possible to inform them of the caucus, and to invite them to attend.
- Repeat the public announcements if enough time is available before the event. (publish weekly if possible leading up to the caucus)
- Hold the caucus event according to the outline set in the Caucus Packet the Secretary will provide. This is a formal, but simple meeting which includes most importantly:
- electing members to a four year term to sit on the Parish Executive Committee(PEC)
- electing delegates to the three Regional Committees - Bylaws & Rules Committee, Platform Committee, and Convention Planning Committee, and
- setting a date, time and location for the first meeting of the newly formed PEC.
- Report back the results of the caucus and sending the Caucus Packet to the Secretary for official record keeping.
All Caucuses should be held as soon as possible.
The absolute last date for a Parish Caucus should be Sunday March 25, 2012, though earlier is preferable.
Optimally, all parishes in a region should organize via their own caucuses 30 days before their Regional Caucus is set to be held, which also should be 30 days prior to the State Convention which is set for the weekend of April 21-23, 2012. Thus, Regional Caucuses should be held no later than March 25, and Parish Caucuses no later than February 25th. However, since it is possible not all parishes in a region will organize, those that do can simply be sure to do so by March 25th, and then the Region can hold its Caucus at the State Convention, though this should be avoided if at all possible. (see the Regional Caucus description for more information)
