Regional Organizer

If your Metro Region does not already have a State Central Committee Representative, then the Regional Organizer is responsible for holding a caucus to elect one.

If your region does not have an organizer listed, and you'd like to volunteer, please send an e-mail to the LPL Secretary.

Once you've expressed interest in organizing your region, the Secretary will give you the required materials and assistance you need to hold a successful caucus.

Responsibilities of the Regional Organizer are:

  1. Set a date for the caucus and secure a suitable venue. The meeting place will need to be free from distraction. Public library meeting rooms are excellent for this and should accommodate most size caucuses.
  2. Publish the announcement for the caucus with date, time, and contact info for more details in at least one, if not more public calendars with local newspapers, radio, TV, etc. The more the better. Your caucus date should be far enough in advance of this announcement that people will hear or read it, and be able to attend. Also be mindful of cutoff dates for submissions to the various calendars.
  3. Using the Libertarian contact list provided to you by the Secretary, contact as many Libertarians as possible to inform them of the caucus, and to invite them to attend.
  4. Repeat the public announcements if enough time is available before the event. (publish weekly if possible leading up to the caucus)
  5. Hold the caucus event according to the outline set in the Caucus Packet the Secretary will provide. This is a formal, but simple meeting which includes most importantly:
    1. electing a representative to a four year term to sit on the State Central Committee(SCC)
    2. Holding sessions of committee meetings if not already done so for each of the three Regional Committees - Bylaws & Rules Committee, Platform Committee, and Convention Planning Committee. These committees optimally should meet after all members are selected by the various parish caucuses and prior to the Regional Caucus to discuss proposals they would like to advance at the State Convention. They should also select one of their own and two alternates to sit on each of the State Convention level Committees.
    3. nominating delegates to be considered by the State Convention to represent Louisiana at the National Libertarian Convention.
Other business can include general discussion of local LP politics, upcoming election efforts, support for LP Presidential Candidates, etc.
  6. Report back the results of the caucus and sending the Caucus Packet to the Secretary for official record keeping.

All Caucuses should be held as soon as possible.

The absolute last date for a Regional Caucus should be Sunday March 25, 2012.

Optimally, all parishes in a region should organize via their own caucuses 30 days before their Regional Caucus is set to be held, which also should be 30 days prior to the State Convention which is set for the weekend of April 21-23, 2012. Thus, Regional Caucuses should be held no later than March 25, and Parish Caucuses no later than February 25th. However, since it is possible not all parishes in a region will organize, those that do can simply be sure to do so by March 25th, and then the Region can hold its Caucus at the State Convention, though this should be avoided if at all possible.

Since Regional levels of committees need to meet to discuss business, plan the convention, and select delegates to the State level committees, it is best to hold the Regional Caucus 30 days in advance of the State Convention. If a region should fail to do so, it can caucus at the State Convention with members present from their region, for the purpose only of selecting a Regional Representative to a four year term on the SCC. (since all other purposes of the caucus are moot as they are for committee work PRIOR to the State Convention.)

This provision exists to ensure that should parishes fail to organize and should Regional Caucuses fail to be held in sufficient advance of the State Convention, members of that region can have an opportunity to select their SCC representative. Otherwise, their region would be without representation on the SCC.
